advanced research projects agency(ARPA) in order to compete with the Soviet Union.
1969
ARPA contracts BBN to create ARPANET. in 1969, the first 4 universities are
connected. The universities are UCLA, Stanford Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara and University of Utah. The first message is sent from UCLA to Stanford across ARPANET(later to develop into the internet).
1972
The first email program is created by ray tomlinson. The @ symbol is used in this first version of email and becomes the standard for all email in the future. The message program can list, read, file, reply, and forward.
In this same year, the first computer-to-computer chat takes place at UCLA.
1973
ARPANET creates the first international connection to University College in London England and the royal radar establishment in Norway.
FTP is born.
1974
Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn publish a paper on the design of the protocol TCP. They also use the term Internet for the first time.
1976
Apple computer is released.
Queen Elizabeth II goes online to send out the first royal message.
1979
UESNET, for newsgroups, is created by Steve Bellovin, Tom Truscott, and Jim Ellis. Users join the groups from all over the world to discuss everything from politics to comics.
1980
The first virus is accidently unleashed on October 27 and brings ARPANET to a halt.
1981
IBM releases the first personal computer.
National Science Foundation creates a seperate backbone from ARPANET called CSNET.
France Telecom distributes Minitel across France.
1983
University of Wisconsin creates the Domain Naming System which translates IP numbers into word names making it easier for people to remember server and email addresses.
Desktop computers start including IP networking software.
1984
CDNET is upgraded to T1 lines and renamed NSFNET. The lines will be 25 times faster than the 56 kbps of the previous lines.
1988
NSFNET T1 backbone completed. a large boost in traffic upon completion. Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Norway and Swedan connect to NSFNET.
Novenber 1, 1988 the internet virus called the "Internet Worm" is deployed. In response to the virus, the Computer Emergency Response Team(CERT) is formed.
IRC chat is developed by Jarkko Oikarinen.
1990
28 countries connected to NSFNET.
The world, the first commercial provider to the internet, comes online.
1991
NSFNET lifts ban on commercial use of the web.
Tim Berners-Lee and CERT create a hypertext system(HTML) to efficiently distribute information.
The prefix World Wide Web(www) is released.

1992
World bank comes online.
The first audio and video broadcasts take place over a portion of the internet known as MBONE.
1993
Mosaic, the first graphics-based browser and the forerunner to Netscape, is created by Marc Andreessen.
The US White House comes online.

Internic is created to provide registration, database, and directory services.
1994
Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark form Netscape.
Pizza Hut offers pizza ordering from the web.
First Virtual, the first cyberbank, comes online.

Dial-up services Compuserve, AOL and Prodigy open their doors for business.

US Communications of Decency Act becomes law to prohibit the distribution of indecent material over the web. This law is overturned by the Supreme Court in 1997.

The us government hands over dns management to an industry group called internet corporation for assigned numbers(icann).

The first registration service under guidence from the iCANN, register.com, launches on June 7.

Napster is forced to shut down for the pirating of music by its users.
Madonna crashs aol servers when users are offered a sneak opportunity to get tickets to her "Drowned World" tour.
