Comedienne, actress, singer, mother Sandra Bernhard does it all with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. Her One Woman Off Broadway shows have been described as lounge acts from hell. Her 1990 highly acclaimed Without You Im Nothing debuted on the big screen, she was part of the Roseanne cast for six years, and wrote a book called, Confessions of a Pretty Lady.

All of this without ever losing her own voice or her personality that makes her so compelling, so funny, so Sandy.

Comedy World Radio knew a great thing when they heard it and asked Miss Sandra to host SANDRAdio a weekend talk radio show, where comedy, autobiography, philosophy, and fashion merge into a radio show like no other.

Zap2it.com caught up with the very busy Sandra Bernhard from her home in New York City. Initially she sounded rushed, understandably the sound of children rough housing in the background was audible, but soon she warmed right up to answering questions in her typical smart, snappy, witty way. Ladies and Gentlemen Miss. Sandra Bernhard!

Zap2it.com: So Sandra, did Comedy World approach you?

Sandra Bernhard: Well they wanted me to do it but the way that it evolved was definitely my process.

Zap2it.com: Is it more of a challenge for you to do material knowing that the audience cant see you, and that you cant incorporate physicality into the show?

Sandra Bernhard: I just kind of adjusted it for the format; its just a different way of approaching it. Im not doing stand up comedy Im really conversing with people. I have some people in there, and we just start bouncing off each other and then theres music so its not like trying to do stand up in any way shape or form. Its just real easy and the humor comes out of wherever the conversations lead.

Zap2it.com: Who do you think your SANDRAdio audience is?

Sandra Bernhard: I dont have any clue and really I dont care. Im still gonna do what Im gonna do so theyre just gonna have to listen to what Im going to say! Im not interested in pandering to a certain audience.

Zap2it.com: The guests that you have on seem like theyre all really good friends of yours that just happened to swing by the studio. Do you take a casual approach to booking guests for your show?

Sandra Bernhard: Weve been kind of left to our own devices to get bigger names on so when there are people in town, here in New York, and theyre available we just grab them. A lot of times its just my personal contacts and friendships, even with people in the business. Its not that easy to get people on so you have to be casual about it. Youre kind of like a free floating entity.

Zap2it.com: The very beginning of your show seems like it may be the only part that youve planned the rest seems very spontaneous. How much time do you spend preparing for each show?

Sandra Bernhard: None. We just show up and do it. And you know Sarah whos my writer and my partner on the show, well talk about stuff during the week anyway, whats going on culturally and politically, well usually just weave it in. But we dont ever formally prepare material.

Zap2it.com: Do you ever use it as a platform to try out new material?

Sandra Bernhard: No, not at all. As a matter of fact the new material just comes out of me completely casual.

Zap2it.com:There arent a lot, if any, radio shows that talk about fashion as much as you do. Do you see yourself more as a participant or an observer in the fashion world?

Sandra Bernhard: Both, I have a lot of friends in fashion, probably more than in any other part of the creative world.

Zap2it.com: Why do you think that is?

Sandra Bernhard: I just kind of fell into that world. I always enjoyed it, I think its really creative and I have a lot of friends that do hair and make-up, it all just sort of interweaves. And you know at the same time Im also a commentator on it when I think its just bogus. Ive had a nice position in that world, of being able to be a part of it, welcomed into it and at the same time Critiquing it.

Zap2it.com: You also mention politics quite a bit, does the Bush administration scare you?

Sandra Bernhard: Ive never talked about them before in live performances, so its a really new area for me but I think that this year was particularly inspiring.

Zap2it.com: Because of Bush?

Sandra Bernhard: Yes, because of the election and because of the total corrupt nature of it. You know, there was no way not to ignore it if youre a thinking person.

Zap2it.com: Did it make you more politically active?

Sandra Bernhard: Ive always had a firm stance on where I stand politically I just never thought of it as interesting material. But Ive managed to work it in a way that works for me in my material.

Zap2it.com: What do you think of all this controversy over Eminem?

Sandra Bernhard: Well you know, its hard to know where hes really coming from. I think hes probably got a certain kind of consciousness where hes kind of shining a light on where hes come from and the mentality of a huge part of the white male population. At the same time hes probably a victim of it and at the same time hes probably exploiting it. So I think that on three different levels hes doing his thing. I definitely think its interesting and it certainly shakes things up.

Zap2it.com: You did a great cameo on V.I.P, would you consider doing the show again?

Sandra Bernhard: I guess if they called me and theyd written another script with the character, yea Id do it.

Zap2it.com: What was it like working with Pamela Anderson?

Sandra Bernhard: Oh shes very sweet, although she wasnt around that much. Most of my scenes were with other people and I think she tries to keep her participation as minimal as possible. She has her kids and when youre the star of a show you try to have as much time to yourself as possible, but shes great, shes a sweetheart.

Zap2it.com: Are you still doing The Love Machine in New York?

Sandra Bernhard: No, I just finished doing it here but Im going to go on the road with it. Im probably going to do it in L.A. for three or four weeks.

Zap2it.com: Which city do you consider home, L.A. or New York?

Sandra Bernhard: At this point, New York. I still have my place in L.A. because you never know when youre going to need to be there. Its a house I bought a long time ago at a point when I couldnt afford a really expensive house so it was really affordable for me to be able to keep it. And its a really cute house so I just hold onto it and when Im in town I dont have to deal with a hotel and all that insanity.

Zap2it.com: You have so many projects on your plate, The Love Show, SANDRAdio, not to mention a child, how do you manage to keep it all together? Do you think each one feeds into the other?

Sandra Bernhard: Once you have your energy going and youre operating at a really high rate of speed you can do more than the average person. I allot my time for all the different things that need to get done in the course of the day.

Zap2it.com: SANDRAdio is also available online, what do you think of people communicating with each other on the web?

Sandra Bernhard: I think its really amazing. I think its a really huge world out there, I mean Im not really a participant in that part of it, that isnt something that Ive allotted time for, I have so many relationships that I need to address in my current milieu. For a lot of people its a great way of escaping a limited lifestyle. Like if youre a kid in the mid west and youre feeling certain emotions and there is no way for you to express that, then theres a whole world out there waiting to communicate. I think its really cool and maybe sometimes it can be a little dangerous but I guess thats just a risk people take.

Zap2it.com: Would you have objections to your daughter making friends on the Internet?

Sandra Bernhard: I prefer her making friends in real life which shes doing already. Shes a very social little person. I think its much healthier to be able to communicate frankly, to be able to look someone in the eye. Thats important.
